Morphological characters

1.0-2 mm.
Apterous: glossy brown, with numerous hairs all over the body.
Alate: brown with hairs, antennae short with 5 segments; large black patch on hind-parts of abdomen; tiny cornicles, reduced to a pore, cauda rounded.

S. maydis is not very frequent.
Colonies are visited by ants.

Agronomic impact

S. maydis colonizes young shoots near base and sometimes stems and inflorescences. The leaves go yellow, roll up, then dry up.
