The apterous forms are characterized by the presence of capitate hairs on the head and abdomen.

Certain species are dioecious and host-alternating: the primary hosts (Elaeagnaceae) and secondary hosts (Asteraceae and some Polygonaceae) whereas others are monoecious on Asteraceae or Polygonaceae.
