Morphological characters

Apterous: small, reddish to blackish red with shades of brown between.
Alate: large dark dorsal patch on abdomen, marginal sclerites and ventral patches dark arranged in pairs, antennae same length as body, cornicles long, dark and slightly swollen, cauda medium length.

Life cycles

Monoecious holocyclic.
Anholocyclic in the temperate zones.

Host plants

Caryophyllaceae and Violaceae.

Particular characteristics

Confusion possible with Myzus persicae.
M.certus does not occur on potato.

Agronomic impact

M. certus causes direct damage in the form of leaf rolling.
